Infantile Health Care

Infantile tuina for health care is an effective method to prevent diseases. In the Tang dynasty, there was a record in the great medical book--" Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold"(Qianjinyaofang) written by Sun Simiao, a famous doctor. It says "Even though infants are not sick, massage with ointments can often be performed on their fontanel, palms, and soles in the early morning, which really has the effect in protecting infants from cold wind. " Therefore, it is evident that tuina is also of significance in infants' health care and prevention of diseases.   Methods of infantile tuina for health care are simple,convenient and effective, and acceptable to infants. They are also easy to be spread and popularized. Now several sets of commonly used tuina methods for infants' health care are introduced in the following.   Methods for Health Care and Building Up the Constitution     MANIPULATIONS  Press-knead Zhongwan (CV 12) for 3 minutes, rub the abdomen for 3 minutes, pressknead Zusanli (ST 36) on both sides 50 times each, and pinch the spine 3 - 5 times.   Usually this therapy is given in the morning or on an empty stomach, once a day. It has to stop when some acute diseases occur,  and resumes after  the  infant recovers.     ACTIONS  The therapy has the effect of strengthening the spleen and regulating the stomach, improving appetite, bettering the physique, and promoting growth and development.  Methods for Preventing Common Cold     MANIPULATIONS   Rub both palms against each other till they become hot, and scrub the face with the hot palms 80 times or until the cheeks become hot. Press Yingxiang (LI 20) 30 times with a finger, push-rub the chest and the back 3 - 5 times each, press-knead Hegu (LI4) 30 times, and knead Wailaogong (EX-UE 8) 100 – 300 times. This therapy is to be operated once a day. or twice a day when influenza is popularly spreading. While rubbing the chest or the back, put some sesame oil or talcum on these areas. Meanwhile catching cold should be avoided during treatment.    ACTIONS   The therapy has effects of dispersing lung qi and smoothing the orifices, activating yang and consolidating the exterior, and preventing the occurrence of common cold and bronchitis.   Methods for Protection of the Eyes  MANIPULATIONS  Wipe the forehead with index fingers or separating-push the forehead from above Yintang (EX-HN 3) to both the sides 30 times. Press-knead Zanzhu (BL 2), Jingming (BL 1), the middle point of the brows, Tongziliao (GB 1) and Sibai (ST 2) 30 times respectively. Knead-wipe the orbits 30 times.  Usually these manipulations are performed after ophthalmokopia,  such as  after  infants'  learning,  small children's reading, or watching TV.    ACTIONS  They have the effects of dredging the meridians, activating circulation of qi and blood, relieving fatigue of the ocular muscles, regulating the vision, and preventing myopia.     The manipulations of infantile tuina for health care can be taught to operate by older children.
